Oklahoma City, OK – The Oklahoma City Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire that broke out in a northwest Oklahoma City neighborhood on Monday afternoon, displacing at least two residents.
Fire crews responded to the scene near NW 122nd Street and N Rockwell Avenue after receiving a call from the homeowners, who had self-evacuated from the burning structure. According to Fire Department officials, there were two occupants inside the home at the time of the fire.
Shift Commander David Shearer stated that the residents reported noticing smoke coming from a light fixture while using their wood-burning fireplace. Upon investigating the source of the smoke, the occupants discovered flames and smoke coming from the second-floor attic.
The two individuals were able to evacuate the home without injury. Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and managed to contain the fire in the attic before it could spread to surrounding properties.
“We’re fortunate that the fire didn’t extend beyond the attic and reach neighboring homes,” Shearer said. “Our crews acted quickly and effectively to control the situation.”
At least seven fire engines were deployed to the scene, and medical personnel were on standby, though no injuries were reported among the firefighters or the residents. However, Shearer noted that the firefighters did encounter challenging conditions due to smoke and soot.
“Most of our crews are pretty wet and soiled from the smoke and soot,” Shearer added. “We’re making sure to change out their equipment and ensure they’re taken care of.”
The fire department has not yet determined the exact cause of the blaze, though it is suspected to be related to the wood-burning fireplace. The investigation is ongoing.
While the residents have been displaced, no further details about the property damage have been released at this time. Fire crews are continuing their work at the scene.
