Enid, Okla. — New body camera footage has emerged, showing the moments when Norman Police officers captured Landon Appleby, a man linked to a series of home burglaries and a sexual assault. Appleby, who was arrested at the end of January, is accused of breaking into homes across the city, with court documents revealing he committed at least 15 burglaries since last year. The charges also include a reported rape.
The arrest follows a months-long investigation, with police first receiving reports of suspicious activity in September. One victim, identified in police reports, described waking up in her bedroom to find a man standing there without a shirt. The individual reportedly fled the scene after the two made eye contact.
In one particularly disturbing incident, police allege that Appleby sexually assaulted a victim who initially mistook him for her husband. The victim, as described in the affidavit, was unaware of the intrusion until she woke up to realize the man was not her spouse.
As police worked to track down Appleby, the new footage released by the Norman Police Department shows officers combing a local apartment complex in search of the suspect. The footage captures the moment officers spotted Appleby, initiating a foot chase through the complex as they pursued him on foot.
“I got him running southbound through the duplexes… stop,” one of the officers can be heard saying in the body camera footage. The chase continues for several moments, and officers eventually subdued Appleby, taking him into custody.
In an attempt to explain his presence, Appleby told officers on video, “I was literally going home from Burger King, going through these apartments.”
Appleby now faces charges in connection to the multiple burglaries and the alleged rape, with authorities continuing their investigation. The release of the body camera footage sheds new light on the arrest, illustrating the tense moments leading up to Appleby’s capture.
