16-Year-Old Killed in Shooting in Southeast Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — A 16-year-old boy tragically lost his life on Sunday night after a shooting in southeast Oklahoma City. The incident occurred near an apartment complex located at Southeast 44th Street and Sunnylane Road. Oklahoma City Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are seeking assistance from the public to identify the suspect.

According to police, officers arrived at the scene and found the victim in a breezeway just outside an apartment door. Paramedics were working to treat the victim, but despite their efforts, the teenager later died at the hospital.

The victim was identified as Jashaun Cheatom, 16, on Monday morning. Authorities have not yet released information on what led to the shooting, and no suspects have been identified as of the latest reports.

“It’s very disturbing to hear about a child being killed like that,” said Lonnie Walker, a resident of the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. Walker, who did not hear anything on the night of the incident, described hearing gunshots in the area just a couple of weeks ago. “I heard something go boom boom, you know?” she recalled.

Walker expressed concerns about safety and has previously approached management about issues like lighting in the complex. “When I feel like something is wrong, I go to the office and say something,” she added.

The police department is continuing to gather information and has called on the public to help provide any leads or details that might aid in solving the case.

“This is a tragic and senseless loss of life,” said Msgt. Gary Knight of the Oklahoma City Police Department. “We are hopeful that someone in the community may have seen or heard something that could help us move forward in this investigation.”

As the search for the gunman continues, the Oklahoma City Police Department urges anyone with information to come forward.
