Betz’s family traveled to Oklahoma for the sentencing, where they had the difficult opportunity to face the man responsible for their loved one’s death. Laura Beckman, Betz’s younger sister, spoke about her emotions after seeing the convicted man in person for the first time. “I’m not sure what I was expecting. He definitely looked a little rough around the edges, and of course, he had a smirk, a smug look on his face,” Beckman said.
The tragedy began in June 2024 when Betz went missing from her home in North Carolina. Her family grew increasingly concerned after she stopped communicating, and her social media accounts were deactivated. “It wasn’t like her to fall off the grid. Her Facebook was gone, her phone was turned off,” Beckman recalled in a previous interview. The family’s worst fears were confirmed when they received a call from law enforcement officials informing them that Elyse was dead.
Court documents revealed disturbing details about Betz’s final days. According to authorities, Betz and Kyle Fedus, her alleged killer, traveled to Oklahoma to avoid arrest. Investigators later uncovered that the two had planned a suicide pact, intending to overdose on drugs if they were caught by police. Fedus admitted to injecting Betz with fentanyl and methamphetamine before taking the same lethal dose himself.
After the fatal overdose, Fedus was apprehended by Edmond police at a nearby hotel. He was arrested not only for his involvement in Betz’s death but also for an outstanding warrant. Despite the conviction, the pain of losing Elyse remains overwhelming. “We wake up every morning with an immense amount of grief and sadness, realizing that another day has passed and Elyse still isn’t here,” Laura Beckman said.
