Deputies Injured in Shootout After Domestic Violence Call in Guthrie

Guthrie, OK — A tense and chaotic scene unfolded on the south side of Guthrie on Wednesday afternoon when two Logan County deputies were injured in a shootout while responding to a domestic violence call. The incident, which took place around 1:30 p.m., ended with the suspect dead and both deputies recovering with only minor injuries.

According to Logan County Sheriff Damon Devereaux, the deputies were released from the hospital after receiving treatment for their injuries. The sheriff expressed his gratitude that his officers walked away from a potentially deadly encounter with only minor harm.

“Domestic situations are among the most dangerous calls we face, and today, we faced that danger head-on,” Sheriff Devereaux remarked in a statement following the incident.

The situation began when deputies arrived at a home near Midwest Boulevard and Seward Avenue in south Guthrie to respond to a domestic violence call. Upon approaching the residence, deputies made contact with a woman inside the house, but she quickly shut the door, prompting the officers to investigate further. As they began to move around the back of the home, they were suddenly met with gunfire from the suspect.

Both deputies were struck by the suspect’s bullets. A third deputy, who had arrived as backup, returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect fled the scene but was later located and found dead shortly after the exchange.

As the deputies were rushed to OU Health for treatment, law enforcement personnel gathered at the hospital to check on their condition. Sheriff Devereaux confirmed that, by the grace of God, both deputies were expected to recover from their injuries.

“They’re doing well, with only minor injuries,” Devereaux said, expressing relief that the outcome wasn’t worse.

Though the deputies’ injuries were not life-threatening, the sheriff acknowledged that the traumatic events of the day would stay with them.

“While they are fortunate to be alive, this will always be something they carry with them,” Devereaux added.

The incident underscores the inherent dangers faced by law enforcement officers, especially when responding to domestic violence calls, which are often unpredictable and violent. Despite the tense outcome, the deputies’ quick actions, as well as the support from their colleagues, helped prevent a worse tragedy.
