OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — A sizable sinkhole that appeared over the weekend on Reno Avenue has left local residents uneasy as the hole continues to expand. The sinkhole, which stretches roughly 13 feet in length, was first noticed on Saturday, just west of Cemetery Road, and has since become a growing concern for those living in the area.
Brad Morris, a nearby resident, spoke about the unsettling experience of watching the sinkhole’s rapid growth. “Sinkholes are scary, man. They just kind of pop up out of nowhere,” Morris remarked. He described how the hole quickly grew to about five or six feet across by Saturday afternoon, with no sign of slowing down. By Monday, the hole had expanded to a length of 13 feet, 2 inches, raising alarm among neighbors who feared further damage to the street and surrounding properties.
Morris, who has lived in the area for several years, expressed his worries for the residents living near the corner of Reno Avenue. “We were not too concerned until it started to take out the rest of the street,” he said. “We were worried about those guys down on the corner more than anything, just because they’re right on the street, right on their backyard.”
The sinkhole’s growing size prompted calls to the City of Oklahoma City for clarification. A spokesperson from the city indicated that while the cause of the sinkhole has yet to be determined, it could be related to a recently-installed gas line. “They’ve been doing road work up and down that other side of the road for the past year or two,” said Morris, noting the ongoing construction in the area. The city’s response suggests that the new gas line installation may have inadvertently caused a shift in the ground, contributing to the sinkhole’s formation.
The portion of Reno Avenue affected by the sinkhole is maintained by the City of Oklahoma City. As the situation continues to develop, officials are closely monitoring the area to assess the cause of the sinkhole and to ensure the safety of residents and motorists. In the meantime, neighbors are left to wonder how much larger the hole might grow and when they can expect a resolution.
