OKLAHOMA – A 10-year-old boy from Ponca City died over the weekend after an auto-pedestrian accident left him with permanent brain damage for over a year.<\/p>\n

For the past 13 months, has been under the care of nurses in the metro. Over the weekend, Alonzo\u2019s lungs stopped working and he was rushed from Bethany to OU Children\u2019s in OKC.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe figured he would be home one day,\u201d Alonzo\u2019s aunt Sunny Haze said. \u201cWe would maybe bring him home one day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sunny Haze tells KFOR her Ponca City home is extra quiet with just a week to Christmas.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe should be out there playing up and down the street with the kids or playing in the snow,\u201d Haze said.<\/p>\n

Haze says she\u2019s trying to come to terms with her nephew never coming home after hoping for a miracle for months.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis stuff is still here,\u201d Haze said. \u201cHis skateboard is still in the back room.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in October 2019, Alonzo and his classmate were running across the street for snacks at a Dollar General when a car slammed straight into the 10-year-old, \u201claunching him into the air.\u201d Police say the fourth grader \u201clanded head-first on the concrete.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t blame anybody,\u201d Haze said. \u201cIt was an accident, I believe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The driver allegedly told investigators that \u201che didn\u2019t see the boy and tried to swerve but it was too late.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alonzo suffered irreversible brain damage and a fractured pelvis.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wasn\u2019t the same anymore after that,\u201d Haze said.<\/p>\n

Haze says she was notified last Wednesday that Alonzo had stopped breathing and he needed to be put on life support. Over the weekend, the boy\u2019s body couldn\u2019t hang on any longer.<\/p>\n

Haze received a call early Sunday morning telling her Alonzo didn\u2019t make it through the night.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought we would have to do this,\u201d Haze said.<\/p>\n

After their investigation, Ponca City police determined the driver of the accident wasn\u2019t at fault due to \u201cAlonzo not using a crosswalk and the rainy weather that particular day.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
