CHOCTAW, Okla. \u2014 A late-night traffic stop turned into a lengthy police pursuit on May 26, ending in an unusual arrest after a suspect fled through thick woods and was captured without his pants.<\/p>\n
According to the Choctaw Police Department, officers attempted to pull over Curtis Kaulaity Jr. around 10:25 p.m. near NE 23rd and Hiwassee for a broken tail light and headlight. Rather than stopping, Kaulaity allegedly sped off, leading police on a nearly 10-mile chase through eastern Oklahoma County.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just heavily, heavily wooded out there,\u201d said Choctaw Police Chief Kelly Marshall, noting the challenges officers faced during the pursuit. \u201cYou wonder why they\u2019re not stopping.\u201d<\/p>\n
The chase ended near NE 36th and Smith, where Kaulaity reportedly abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot into dense woods. Officers said he ran the equivalent of three football fields through thick underbrush. On the opposite side of the wooded area, Oklahoma County deputies were waiting and spotted the suspect\u2014identifiable by his blue shirt and shorts\u2014emerging from the brush.<\/p>\n
Body camera footage captured deputies yelling \u201cDanger! Danger! Danger!\u201d as they closed in. Kaulaity attempted to jump a fence but was ultimately caught, missing his pants.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe woods literally tore the suspect\u2019s clothing off it was so thick,\u201d said Chief Marshall. \u201cThe suspect did not stop, and a taser was deployed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Authorities later confirmed that Kaulaity had multiple outstanding warrants in Caddo County, including charges for obstructing an officer, second-degree burglary, and assault and battery. Following his arrest, he now faces additional complaints, including endangering others while eluding police and several traffic violations.<\/p>\n
Chief Marshall emphasized the importance of routine enforcement. \u201cMaking traffic stops matters,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Kaulaity is currently in custody as the investigation continues.<\/p>\n
